Straw Bale Gardening has been a completely unexpected adventure for Joel Karsten, that began with his moment of curiosity about whether it might be possible to grow vegetables in a bale of straw. What a crazy idea, right?!?
It’s been a labor of love ever since.
This website is part of that story … and you are, too.
Our SBG Club website is designed to make sure anybody who wants to try to grow their own food can SUCCEED.
That’s the first part of our mission.
We also hope the Club grows even more good things in your life: more peaceful time in nature, more time together with family and friends, more inspiration & impact in your own community.
Did you notice that’s still all about you? Any of that growing in your life, brings us a lot of joy, also.
Here’s where the vision for Straw Bale Garden Club grows even bigger:
There are lots of places in the world where Straw Bale Gardening can actually mean the difference between sickness and starvation … or nutrition, health and survival.
SBG Club isn’t a charity, but we have made sure all our how-to videos are available for free.
We plan to keep creating more helpful educational and entertaining material for all of you, but we also want to find more ways for the SBG method to help the people who are in truly desperate situations.
There are more hungry people around the globe than most of us realize. SBG can help them.
To do that, we hope to publish resources such as short, simple how-to videos that can be easily translated into multiple languages.
We’d like to teach & inspire people living in refugee camps to use this method, because SBG can not only feed people and reduce the economic burden of caring for those populations, but also inspire a sense of empowerment, leadership & community in those places.
Who knew all of that potential could grow from one man’s frustration with backyard dirt that wasn’t good enough for a traditional vegetable garden?
The SBG story is 29 years old in 2020. It’s already bigger and better than Joel could ever have expected.
What’s next? We don’t know, for sure. But we know the impact of this method of gardening can keep growing in the world, and we will work to help that happen.
Please join us a member of Straw Bale Garden Club.
Become an even bigger part of the Straw Bale Gardening story.
What’s next for SBG? We don’t know, exactly. Let’s find out together.
Sincerely,
Joel & Kelly
